OABI RACE

The OABI is the ultimate test of stamina as paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, surf skis, crew sculls and shells race around the 7-mile Detroit treasure, Belle Isle.  The event began in 2011 as an underground challenge among the SUP community to test who had the biggest gains over the summer paddle season.

"I love this course. We’re not doing any bouys. It’s straightaways. It’s scenic. Being able to see the Canadian side, the towers. Everything. It’s a great venue for a race." - Brian LeFeve, Great Lakes Surf Shop

Because the race takes place in international waters, the trophies – known as Black Blade – have an international flavor. The men’s SUP trophy has a Canadian maple leaf on one side to represent Canada and a star on the other side to represent the USA. The women’s SUP trophy has an Ontario trillium on one side to represent Canada and a Michigan apple blossom on the other to represent the USA. The kayak and rowing trophies are designed in a similar way with international flavor on each blade.
